Our client, a prominent player in the rail industry, is seeking a Contractors Engineer Manager (CEM) to work on a significant railway station redevelopment project in Birmingham. This long-term contract role involves leading and coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering activities across the programme. It is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineering leader with a robust background in rail infrastructure and a proven track record in delivering complex station or large-scale transport projects. This role is outside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary engineering authority for the contractor, ensuring all design and technical activities comply with project requirements, standards, and assurance processes.
- Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary engineering teams, covering electrical, mechanical, civil, architectural, and systems engineering disciplines.
- Oversee the development, review, and approval of engineering designs, ensuring alignment with Network Rail standards and project specifications.
- Manage the interface between design, construction, and testing/commissioning teams to ensure seamless delivery.
- Provide technical leadership on LV electrical systems, including fire systems, wiring, CCTV, access control, and other station systems.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables meet safety, quality, and compliance requirements, including CDM and relevant rail regulations.
- Lead engineering risk management, design change control, and technical issue resolution.
- Coordinate with the CREs (Contractors Responsible Engineers) to ensure discipline-specific compliance and assurance.
- Liaise with client engineering teams, stakeholders, and third parties to manage approvals, technical submissions, and design assurance.
- Support construction teams with technical queries, site inspections, and engineering decision-making.
- Oversee testing, commissioning, and handover processes to ensure systems are fully compliant and operational.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Extensive experience as a CEM on major rail infrastructure or station upgrade projects.
- Strong multi-discipline engineering background with the ability to coordinate across civil, MEP, LV systems, and architectural interfaces.
- Electrical engineering expertise, particularly in:
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Electrical containment and wiring
- CCTV and security systems
- Communications and station systems
- Deep understanding of Network Rail standards, assurance processes, and engineering governance.
- Proven ability to manage complex engineering interfaces and lead multi-disciplinary teams.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Experience overseeing testing, commissioning, and technical handover.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or equivalent is highly desirable.
