Our client, a leading consultancy in the rail sector, is currently seeking a Tunnel Ventilation Engineer to join their team in Toronto. This is a permanent opportunity offering hybrid working arrangements (three days a week onsite), and the role focuses on high-profile metro projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Design & Analysis: Develop ventilation solutions for subway stations, tunnels, and emergency scenarios
- Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for airflow, smoke control, and thermal comfort
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Design Manuals, NFPA 130, and applicable codes
- Prepare technical documentation, specifications, and drawings
- Project Coordination: Lead ventilation design activities across project phases (concept, detailed design, construction support)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, fire safety)
- Safety & Risk Management: Conduct emergency ventilation and smoke management studies
- Validate system performance under worst-case conditions using CFD and empirical methods
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Experience in subway or tunnel ventilation design
- Strong technical expertise, including P.Eng designation
- Experience working on rail or mass transit projects
- Proficiency in CFD software (e.g., FDS, ANSYS Fluent)
- Strong knowledge of tunnel aerodynamics
- Understanding of TTC Design Manuals, NFPA 130, and ASHRAE guidelines
- Effective communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities
- Familiarity with emergency ventilation strategies and fire life safety systems
