We are seeking an experienced Crane Driver / Operator to carry out safe and efficient lifting operations, site movements and general operational duties at a busy shipyard. The role involves crane setup, lifting execution, equipment checks, basic maintenance, and supporting operational requirements across the site.
Principal Duties
- Set up cranes and complete all required safety checks
- Load/unload lorries and vessels; move loads across site
- Monitor wind speed, crane stability and load indicators
- Perform minor machinery repairs and maintain lifting records
- Install counterweights, extend/pin boom per method statement
- Operate LMI systems and interpret load charts
- Select correct lifting tackle and reeve hook block appropriately
- Coordinate with slingers/riggers and interpret hand and verbal signals
- Maintain high standards of safety, teamwork, housekeeping, and timekeeping
- Assist Management with equipment servicing and maintenance
- Ensure tools and equipment are accounted for and report any loss/theft
- Complete required inspections and legislative records
- Support van checks and workshop/plant maintenance schedules
- Request procurement of parts or services when needed
- Remain contactable due to the reactive nature of the business
- Undertake on‑call duties as required
- Work independently and prioritise tasks effectively
Required Abilities
- Read and interpret lift plans
- Perform precise and controlled arm-hand movements
- Handle small components safely and accurately
- Clean equipment using appropriate materials
- Work at height, in confined spaces, and in all weather conditions
- Climb ladders/stairs and stand for long periods
- Learn through on‑the‑job instruction and observation
- Use sound judgement in all aspects of work
- Work shifts, nights, weekends, and overtime when needed
- Travel for business requirements
Experience & Training
- Category C1 or C LGV licence (essential for road-travel cranes)
- CPCS Mobile Crane A60 Qualification
- Full UK driving licence
- Strong organisational skills
- Ability to read technical drawings, diagrams, and parts manuals
- Ability to work effectively in a team and support others
- 3 years' mobile crane operating experience

- Ensure personal and team compliance with HS&E legislation
- Follow all safe systems of work and procedures
- Ensure the safety of colleagues, visitors, and the public on-site
- Adhere to staff handbook requirements
- Comply with Drug & Alcohol and Medical/Substance Misuse policies
- Report and record all accidents, incidents, and near misses promptly
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: £20.00 - £22.00 per hour (depending on experience), OT x 1.5
