Job Purpose
To provide technical support across geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects within a multi‑disciplinary team, developing professional competence through supervised work on contaminated land assessments, ground investigations, and geotechnical design. The role includes working towards professional chartership while delivering high-quality technical outputs that support clients' development objectives.
Key Accountabilities
1. Field Work & Site Supervision (40-60% of role)
- Supervise geotechnical and geoenvironmental ground investigations at sites across the UK
- Oversee machine trial pit excavations and borehole drilling operations with external contractors
- Conduct geological logging of soil and rock samples to British Standard
- Undertake infiltration testing, soakaway assessments, ground gas monitoring and groundwater sampling
- Collect soil and groundwater samples following company protocols and relevant standards
- Supervise and/or perform in-situ field testing including SPT, CBR, PLT and TRL‑DCP tests
- Set out investigation locations using GPS equipment
- Conduct site walkovers and reconnaissance surveys
- Prepare and review site-specific risk assessments and method statements in line with company H&S procedures
- Liaise professionally with drilling contractors, clients and site personnel
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and company health and safety policies
2. Contaminated Land Assessment
- Prepare Phase 1 Desk Studies including historical map regression, environmental database searches and Conceptual Site Models
- Design Phase 2 intrusive investigations based on data gaps and risk assessment needs
- Interpret chemical and geotechnical laboratory results
- Undertake Generic Quantitative Risk Assessments
- Complete contaminated land assessments in accordance with EA LCRM guidance, BS10175 and client requirements
- Assess pollutant linkages and risks to human health and controlled waters
- Evaluate soil suitability for reuse and prepare Materials Management Plans
- Recommend remediation strategies to support sustainable development
- Prepare verification reports and closure documentation
3. Geotechnical Engineering
- Interpret ground investigation data
- Prepare geotechnical desk studies and ground investigation reports
- Provide foundation design recommendations in accordance with Eurocodes
- Assess bearing capacity, settlement and ground improvement requirements
- Evaluate slope stability and retaining wall design parameters
- Provide earthworks specifications and pavement design recommendations
- Assess ground-related hazards including mining legacy, subsidence and landslip risks
- Undertake infiltration assessments to support hydrology/surface water management teams
4. Hydrology & Drainage Support
- Assist with drainage strategies and SuDS design
- Conduct desk-based assessments of soils, geology and borehole records
- Undertake soakaway testing
- Support hydrological risk assessments and flood protection studies
- Contribute to drainage calculations using representative site parameters
5. Technical Reporting & Communication
- Produce factual and interpretive reports to company standards
- Prepare technical drawings using CAD systems
- Write clear, technically accurate reports for clients, planners and regulators
- Contribute to EIAs and planning submissions
- Prepare reports to discharge planning conditions
- Maintain accurate project records
6. Technical Software & Systems
- Use specialist software including Openground, GEO5, PDISP and contaminated land risk tools
- Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Complete timesheets and administrative tasks
7. Client Relations & Business Development
- Attend client meetings and site inspections
- Communicate technical findings to technical and non-technical audiences
