Section Engineer - Earthworks / Drainage


Location: Brackley Area (NN13 5GJ) or Aylesbury area (HP18 0PX)
Salary: Up to £47,000 + Excellent Benefits Package
Matchtech is delighted to support EKFB, the joint venture appointed by HS2 to deliver major civil engineering works across an 80km stretch of the new high‑speed rail route between the Chiltern Tunnel and Long Itchington Wood or will be based from our A41 site compound based just outside of Aylesbury. We are currently seeking an experienced Section Engineer with a background in earthworks or drainage to join their growing team.


Package & Benefits

  • Salary: Up to £47,000 per annum
  • Lodging Allowance: £22,000-£24,000 (for candidates living 50+ miles from site; you must stay within 15 miles of the agreed site to claim)
  • Travel Allowance: 33p per mile
  • Car Allowance: £3,500-£4,500 (dependent on experience)
  • Annual Leave: 25 days + bank holidays

The Role


As a Section Engineer, you will report directly to the Sub Agent and oversee the site engineering team from initial construction through to project close‑out. Your role will include assisting with temporary works design, allocating resources, and ensuring delivery against programme, budget, and safety standards.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising and developing the site setting‑out and engineering team
  • Liaising with the Sub Agent and Section Foreman regarding labour, plant, and materials
  • Supporting temporary works design and technical problem‑solving
  • Coordinating and monitoring subcontractor performance
  • Ensuring the team has accurate and up‑to‑date construction information
  • Assisting with the production of programmes, progress reports, resource planning, and cost forecasting

About You - Skills & Qualifications

  • HNC/Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction (or equivalent)
  • Working towards professional membership (e.g., ICE)
  • Strong practical experience in site engineering and construction supervision
  • Essential experience in earthworks, utilities, heavy structures, or drainage
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • Valid CSCS card (White, White-Yellow, Red - Experienced Worker, Black - Manager, or Gold - Supervisor)
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certification
