As a Plater on the submarine refit programme, you will carry out high integrity fabrication, structural work, and steel preparation tasks on complex naval platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, assemble, fit and install structural steelwork components to engineering drawings and technical specifications
  • Mark out, cut, burn, form and straighten plate and structural sections using oxyfuel, plasma, grinders and related tools
  • Carry out structural repairs, renewals and modifications on submarine hulls, frames, bulkheads, decks and internal structures
  • Work to tight tolerances in confined spaces and submarine compartments
  • Use jigs, fixtures and templates to ensure accuracy and repeatability
  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, weld symbols and technical documentation
  • Collaborate with welders, mechanical fitters, pipefitters and NDT teams to meet project targets
  • Adhere to all MOD, dockyard and safety regulations, including confined space and hotwork controls
  • Conduct self inspection to ensure work meets required standards before handover to QA/NDT
  • Support problem solving activities and contribute to efficient workflow during refit phases

Required Experience

  • Previous submarine or warship refit/repair experience
  • Experience working with high grade naval steel and pressure bearing structures
  • Structural alignment, modular build or hull integrity experience
  • Confined space competency and experience working in secure defence environment

Security Clearance

You must be eligible for SC clearance to be considered for this role.

  • If you already hold SC, a transfer can be arranged through UKSV.
  • If you do not currently hold SC, you will be taken through the SC process once selected and approved.

Shifts & Rotation

This role operates on a full rotating shift schedule, cycling through days, backs and weekend coverage. The rotation includes:

  • Mon-Fri - Day Shift
  • Mon-Fri - Back Shift
  • Mon-Sat - Day Shift
  • Sun-Thu - Back Shift
  • Regular weekends off are built into the rotation

Rate

Umbrella

  • £32.50 - Day Shift
  • £40.00 - Back Shift
  • £41.00 - Sunday & Weekday Night Shift
  • £44.50 - Sunday Back/Night Shift

PAYE

Holiday pay can be accrued or advanced, depending on worker preference.

  • £24.27 plus £2.93 holiday pay - Day Shift
  • £29.87 plus £3.60 holiday pay - Back Shift
  • £30.61 plus £3.69 holiday pay - Sunday & Weekday Night Shift
  • £33.23 plus £4.01 holiday pay - Sunday Back/Night Shift
