Role details:

NATS (National Air Traffic Services) are looking for a a senior technical authority with strong UTM (Unmanned Traffic Management) experience to lead the architecture and technical design of software‑intensive, safety‑critical systems. The role focuses on big data platforms, API‑driven services, and cloud‑native architectures supporting UTM/OpenAir capabilities.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong UTM knowledge, including:
    • SORA / UK SORA, JARUS, ASTM F3548, Remote ID, U‑space
  • Experience designingAPI‑first systems:
    • REST, event‑driven / pub‑sub architectures
    • OpenAPI / AsyncAPI standards
  • Proven background with big data and complexdatasets, including:
    • Geo‑spatial and/or time‑series data
    • Data modelling at scale
  • Cloud‑native architecture experience:
    • Kubernetes, containerisation, microservices
    • AWS / Azure / GCP
    • Scalable, highly available, multi‑region designs
  • Infrastructure‑as‑Code (Terraform, Ansible or similar)
  • Understanding of safety‑critical and regulated environments, including assurance considerations (e.g. CAP670, ED‑109A, DO‑178C).
Desirable Experience:
  • SWIM concepts and aviation data standards
  • Ability to understand geo-spatial / time-series databases (such as PostGIS, timescaledb) and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards - both raster and vector formats
  • Advanced API testing and automation
  • Distributed systems and federated architectures
  • Predictive modelling or algorithmic complexity awareness
