Overhead Line Design Engineer


Our client, operating within the power distribution sector, is looking to hire a skilled OHL Engineer. This permanent role involves working on Electricity Transmission and Distribution Projects, handling voltages from 33 kV and upwards. As part of a dedicated project team, you will be instrumental in developing and delivering engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing preliminary and detailed designs for overhead lines and associated equipment, including foundations, conductors, and structural design.
  • Preparation, checking, and submission of various design documents and reports, providing necessary calculations to justify design results.
  • Recording design data and decisions accurately and thoroughly.
  • Supporting Lead Engineers and Principal Designers.
  • Keeping abreast of all relevant legislation, particularly Health and Safety and CDM regulations.
  • Assessing engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance with client requirements, supporting budget preparation for new projects.
  • Ensuring that overhead line designs, equipment, and construction practices adhere to current legislation and operational requirements.
  • Reviewing method statements and risk assessments, liaising with construction and site management teams, and mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Liaising across regional offices to provide end-to-end integrated solutions.
  • Supporting Section Heads in developing policy or procedural documents reflecting client requirements.
  • Carrying out reasonable duties as directed by the Line Manager or Nominated Director.
  • Conducting site visits as required, adhering to health and safety policies and procedures.

Job Requirements:


Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in a related engineering discipline, such as Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Aspirations for or active membership in a relevant professional body, such as MICE, MIStructE, or MIET.


Experience and Skills:

  • Competence in industry software such as PLS CADD, PLS Tower, SAPS, or similar packages.
  • Working knowledge of relevant national and industry standards such as BS EN 50341 and ENATS suite.
  • Experience in the power distribution industry, particularly with voltages of 33 kV and above.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Problem-solving abilities with a logical, pragmatic approach.
  • Capacity to contribute to collaborative, safe, and cost-effective technical schemes.
