Mechanical Maintenance Technician (Product Support Engineer) - Rail

Location: Midlands (home‑based, with frequent travel to depots mainly in Derby and Birmingham)
Contract Type: Permanent
Hours: Full-time

The Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join a field-based engineering team supporting rail products across the Midlands. Reporting to the Site Team Leader or Site Supervisor, you will be responsible for carrying out routine maintenance and repair activities to a high technical and safety standard.

This role suits an engineer with a strong mechanical background, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement and digital ways of working.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out preventative, scheduled and corrective maintenance activities in line with approved manuals, maintenance schedules and contractual requirements
  • Complete planned maintenance in accordance with operating instructions
  • Diagnose faults and undertake repairs using technical documentation, drawings and fault-finding guides
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement of maintenance practices and procedures
  • Complete all service and maintenance documentation accurately for both internal and customer requirements
  • Attend customer meetings as required to support sign-off of completed work
  • Proactively engage with HSQE processes and maintain high safety standards at all times
  • Maintain cleanliness of on-site facilities
  • Accurately record parts usage to support effective stock control
  • Use IT systems effectively, including service and reporting platforms and email
  • Attend local and factory-based training to ensure skills and certifications remain current
  • Provide support at other depots when required and undertake other reasonable duties

Candidate Profile

Essential:

  • Engineering background with a strong mechanical bias (electrical knowledge advantageous)
  • Experience in maintenance, repair and overhaul environments
  • NVQ Level 2 in Engineering or equivalent
  • High level of safety awareness
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and email)

Desirable:

  • NVQ Level 3 in a relevant discipline (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Maintenance)
  • Experience working with diesel engines, ideally in a rail environment
  • Experience transferable from:
    • Automotive maintenance (powertrain/engine focused)
    • Aircraft maintenance

(On-the-job training will be provided for internal systems and specialist product knowledge.)
