Blade Technician Jobs: Your Gateway to a High Adrenaline Career in Wind Energy

The UK's wind power game is huge, with about 7,250 wind turbines powering over 14.6 gigawatts, enough to outgun 15 giant coal or gas plants. Those 21,000+ blades? They need regular love and care. And as Europe's wind turbine installations are skyrocketing by 64% soon, Blade Technicians are in high demand across the continent.

What’s a Blade Technician?

The UK’s wind energy sector is a force to be reckoned with. Around 7,250 wind turbines generate over 14.6 gigawatts of power, enough to replace more than 15 massive coal or gas plants. Each turbine has three blades, which means over 21,000 need regular inspection, maintenance and repair. With Europe’s wind turbine installations projected to grow by 64 percent in the near future, demand for skilled Blade Technicians is climbing fast.

What Does a Blade Technician Do?

Blade Technicians are the specialists keeping wind turbines performing at their best. They inspect, repair and maintain blades onshore, offshore or in factories when weather conditions prevent field work. The role requires skill, precision and confidence at height, plus specialist equipment and training.

The key to entry is a set of Global Wind Organisation Basic Safety Training certificates. With these under your belt you are ready to join projects across the UK and Europe. For example, MHI Vestas, a leading name in wind energy, recently hired over 100 Blade Technicians for the North Wind Offshore Wind Farm in Belgium, working on 72 offshore turbines.

Do you have that it takes?

This is not your average nine to five. Blade Technicians use rope access techniques to climb and descend turbine blades, often hundreds of feet above ground or sea. The job is physically demanding and highly rewarding, offering a unique combination of technical skill and adventure.

Training can be completed in as little as two to three days at providers such as Maersk Training in Newcastle or Aberdeen. Courses cover inspection methods, repair techniques and essential safety procedures.

Pay and Benefits:

Most Blade Technician roles are contract positions with rotation schedules.

  • Onshore: Typically five weeks on and one week off, earning £15 to £19 per hour.

  • Offshore: Usually two weeks on and two weeks off, earning £20 to £25 per hour with travel, accommodation and meals covered.

Additional benefits vary by employer and may include a company van, work phone or other perks.

Where Are the Opportunities?

Almost 90 percent of new power capacity in Europe comes from renewable sources, with wind energy now the EU’s second largest power generator, overtaking coal. Blade Technician jobs are available in key markets across the UK, France, Germany, Romania, Spain and Sweden, with more opportunities emerging as the sector expands.

“The industry is evolving rapidly and skilled Blade Technicians are the backbone of sustainable energy. No better time than now to dive into this electrifying career.” – Diego Baynes, Lead Consultant
