Matchtech and Queen Mary University London Explore Careers in Offshore Wind

The transition to Net Zero depends on a skilled, diverse, and passionate workforce. At Matchtech, we believe that building a sustainable future starts with opening doors for the engineers of tomorrow.

We were recently delighted to welcome 23 engineering students from Queen Mary University London (QMUL) to a half-day insight event focused on careers in renewable energy and offshore wind.

Promoting Diversity in Engineering

As part of our ongoing mission to develop a more inclusive and diverse engineering talent pipeline, all participating students were from underrepresented or disadvantaged groups.

By providing direct access to industry leaders, we aim to broaden awareness of career pathways within the fast-growing renewables sector and offer practical guidance to those entering the workforce.

Industry Insights and Employability

The session provided a comprehensive look at the realities of the modern energy landscape:

  • Sector Growth: Matchtech’s recruitment team delivered an overview of the offshore wind industry, highlighting in-demand skills and emerging opportunities for early-career engineers.
  • Employer Perspectives: Leading offshore renewables employer, SLPE, offered a first-hand view of what it’s like to work on the frontline of the energy transition.
  • Career Readiness: Matchtech led employability skills presentations designed to instil confidence in the students' job searches, followed by networking and one-on-one CV support.
  • Holistic Support: Our charity partner, Foothold, shared vital information on the wellbeing and neurodiversity support available to both students and professional engineers.

What the Participants Said

The feedback from the day highlighted the importance of connecting academic learning with industry reality:

Anna Fons Garcia (QMU Careers) says:

"Thank you to Matchtech and SLPE for their time and precious advice, and for sharing their squiggly career stories, very motivational for my students to hear."

Khadidja Cheref, a Robotics Engineering student, added:

“I learned a lot about the opportunities in offshore wind, and the insights from Matchtech, SLPE and Foothold really opened my eyes to a sector I hadn’t considered before.”

Shaping the Future of Engineering

This event is just one step in our commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) excellence. We are currently planning further events across our various engineering sectors, collaborating with clients to help bridge the skills gap and foster new talent.
