A London local authority in North London is seeking an experienced Senior Traffic Engineer to join its Traffic & Engineering Service on a contract basis. This role offers the opportunity to work on high‑profile transport and public realm programmes within a busy borough environment.
The Role
You will provide a specialist professional traffic engineering service, taking schemes from feasibility through to detailed design and implementation. You will also supervise junior staff and provide professional and technical support across a varied programme of works.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver traffic engineering schemes from feasibility and consultation through to implementation
- Produce detailed designs using AutoCAD
- Act as technical lead on allocated projects
- Supervise and mentor junior engineering staff
- Provide professional and technical advice across the service
- Liaise with internal stakeholders, contractors, and external consultants

- Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs)
- Bus priority and cycling improvement schemes
- Road safety initiatives
- Parking and kerbside management improvements
About You
- Demonstrable experience working within a local authority
- Strong background in traffic engineering and scheme delivery
- Proficient in AutoCAD
- Experience supervising or supporting junior staff
- Comfortable managing multiple schemes in a fast‑paced public sector setting
