Senior Engineer - Electromagnetic Modelling

Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 + benefits
Location: Hampshire (primarily onsite)
Security Clearance: SC (or eligibility to obtain) / Sole UK nationals only

The Opportunity

An established specialist engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Engineer to support the modelling and optimisation of Royal Navy ship systems. This is a highly technical, computer‑based role focused on electromagnetic and antenna modelling, rather than hands‑on hardware work.

You will join a small, highly capable engineering team, working with proprietary in‑house software to assess installed antenna performance, ship topside layouts, and electromagnetic effects. The role offers the chance to contribute meaningfully across the full project lifecycle-seeing designs through from concept to real‑world application on operational vessels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use proprietary electromagnetic modelling software to analyse Royal Navy ship designs
  • Conduct computer‑based modelling to determine antenna placement and performance
  • Produce high‑quality engineering reports and technical documentation
  • Support ship topside design activities and equipment refits
  • Work closely with customers and partner organisations such as DSTL and QinetiQ
  • Collaborate within a small engineering team, contributing ideas and technical insight
  • Engage with projects from early modelling through to delivery and in‑service application

Technical Environment

  • Computational and electrical modelling of complex maritime systems
  • Use of specialist tools (e.g. Segenshworths or similar - training provided)
  • Exposure to applied electromagnetic problems in communications and radar environments
  • CAD skills not required initially; full training will be provided
  • Strong emphasis on adapting to in‑house software and established ways of working

About You

Essential:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Experience with computational or electrical modelling
  • Strong ability to write clear, structured engineering reports
  • Confident communicator, comfortable working with technical stakeholders
  • Self‑motivated and comfortable working in a small, collaborative team

Desirable:

  • Background in radio, satellite communications, radar systems, or antennas
  • Experience supporting Royal Navy or defence programmes
  • Previous customer‑facing engineering or consultancy experience
  • Project or technical leadership experience

Note: Familiarity with antennas is beneficial but not essential.

Working Arrangements

  • Predominantly onsite working due to use of proprietary, in‑house software
  • Some flexibility available, but remote working is limited
  • Flexible working hours offered
  • Close‑knit team environment with real influence over how the business operates

Development & Culture

  • Strong emphasis on training and technical development
  • Opportunity to broaden skills beyond your core specialism
  • Small‑company agility with exposure to a wide variety of technical challenges
  • Engineers are encouraged to contribute ideas and shape future ways of working

Security & Eligibility

  • Sole UK nationality required
  • Must hold SC clearance or be eligible to obtain it
