Section Engineer - Freelance (Inside IR35)
About the Role
A major infrastructure project is seeking an experienced Section Engineer to join the delivery team on a long‑term freelance basis. The project covers a significant stretch of high‑profile civil engineering works, including earthworks, structures, drainage and utilities.
As a Section Engineer, you will report to the Sub Agent and take responsibility for supervising the site engineering function from construction through to close‑out. You will support temporary works design coordination, allocate labour/plant/materials with the Sub Agent and Section Foreman, and ensure all works are delivered to the required standards, programme and budget.
You will manage the site setting‑out team, oversee the performance and development of Site Engineers, and proactively resolve technical issues in collaboration with the Sub Agent. The role also involves monitoring subcontractor performance to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
You will ensure the engineering team has up‑to‑date information, drawings and resources, and contribute to programme updates, progress reporting, cost/resource planning and financial forecasting.
About You - Key Skills & Qualifications
HNC/Degree in Construction or Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
Working towards professional membership (ICE or similar)
Strong practical experience in site engineering and construction supervision
Essential experience in earthworks, utilities, heavy structures or drainage
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Valid CSCS card (White, White/Yellow, Red - Experienced, Black - Manager or Gold - Supervisor)
SSSTS or SMSTS certification
Ability to lead a team, coordinate subcontractors and solve technical issues efficiently
