Freelance Sub Agent / Works Manager - Civil Engineering (Structures/Bridges)

Overview
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Freelance Sub Agent / Works Manager to support delivery on a major civil engineering project in the East Midlands, with a focus on structures and bridge works. This is a key role leading site operations, ensuring works are delivered safely, on programme, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee daily site operations, including sequencing and short-term programming
- Support the Site Agent in delivering works safely, efficiently, and within programme constraints
- Supervise and coordinate subcontractors and ensure productivity targets are met
- Monitor progress, report on performance, and drive improvements where required
- Oversee temporary works and ensure compliance with design specifications
- Implement and manage quality assurance processes, including inspections, ITPs, NCRs, and handover documentation
- Review and authorise method statements, risk assessments, and permits to work
- Ensure adherence to all health, safety, and environmental requirements
- Interpret construction drawings and technical specifications to guide delivery
- Liaise effectively with clients, engineers, site teams, and the wider supply chain
- Take a proactive approach to resolving issues and maintaining programme delivery
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Sub Agent, Works Manager, or in a similar role within civil engineering
- Strong background in structures or bridge projects (preferred)
- Excellent knowledge of site management, programming, quality, and health & safety practices
- CSCS Card (minimum requirement)
- Strong leadership and communication skills
Desirable Skills & Certifications
- SSSTS or SMSTS
- Experience managing temporary works
- Strong commercial and programme awareness
