My Client is recruiting for a Trainee/Junior Quantity Surveyor/ Commercial Engineer

Main purpose of the job:

The main purpose of the role would be to assist in the provision of the full range of Commercial/Quantity Surveying services relating to management of contracts, tender and proposal support, improved financial control, management of the supplier database and negotiation and price certainty relating to key procurement activities.

Specific roles would include:

  • Conditions of Contract review
  • Claims input and advice
  • Setting up frameworks and pricing structures with key suppliers
  • Monitoring of project costs
  • Raising applications of payment and invoice
  • Raising sub-contracts and reviewing applications
  • Liaison with accounts and project team relating to Project profitability and cost forecasting
  • Input and assistance with Proposals and associated pricing
  • Creating an accurate database for costing purposes

Key Areas of Responsibility:

To provide commercial support to the business for both Projects and Maintenance.

Full training within each department and elsewhere as appropriate, will enable the post holder to undertake the following tasks:

  • Estimating and budget setting
  • Advise on procurement strategy and the form of contract
  • Procurement of Main Contractor services including the co-ordination and collation of tender documents, the analysis of tender returns and undertaking of post tender negotiations.
  • Complete robust tender reports
  • Production of contract documentation using both the IChemE and NEC suite of contracts
  • Provide project financial control, via monthly financial reporting and the production of accurate cash flow forecasts
  • Manage and analyse project variations, including any claims for loss and expense
  • Risk management; identify, analyse and develop responses to commercial risks
  • When requested, give clear and concise advice on contract matters such as claims for extension of time
  • Carry out interim valuations; value completed work and arrange payments
  • Analyse and agree final accounts in accordance with the contract
  • To have an awareness of the CDM Regulations

  • To represent the company in a positive manner and play a full and active part on the further development of the Business
  • It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the company's environmental impact wherever possible. This will include recycling, switching off lights, computers, monitors and equipment when not in use, reducing paper waste by minimising printing/copying, reducing water usage, reporting faults with heating/cooling systems and minimising travel. Where the role includes the ordering and use of supplies or equipment the post holder will consider the environmental impact of purchases.

Skills and Ability

  • A general awareness of the building construction and maintenance industry including contractual matters and legislation together with a basic appreciation of procurement practices.
  • The ability to plan, prioritise and organise work in order to meet service delivery targets.
  • The ability to carry out detailed and accurate financial monitoring of projects in order to control budgets.
  • The ability to work independently and with a minimum of supervision within a team environment and respond positively and flexibly to a changing environment.
  • Ability to take initiative and make informed decisions.
  • A good understanding of the value and use of new working practices and technologies, in improving services and modernising work practices. The ability to utilise computers and information systems.
  • The ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing to all contacts.
  • Ability to receive and record information accurately in a clear and concise manner
  • The ability to contribute to and support the work of other members of the team
  • Ability to understand and apply policy and procedures in day to day working

Experience/Qualifications

  • Ideally a Quantity Surveying degree or similar qualification
  • GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English
  • A minimum of 2 A Levels at grade C or above with one in a relevant subject
  • Relevant work experience - learners who have work and trade experience in the constructionindustry are welcome to apply
