Our client have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Highways Engineer - Vehicle Restraint Systems VRS to join their Highways team in the South East region. You can be based from either Basingstoke or Maidstone (1-2 days per week / hybrid).

Job description

This role provides an excellent opportunity to apply your extensive experience, knowledge and skills to all aspects of infrastructure engineering and asset management. Within this role, you will be undertaking the identification and evaluation of asset data and needs in order to develop early solutions, in line with agreed methodologies and prioritisation criteria and the designing of highway renewals and maintenance schemes.

What you'll be leading on

  • To ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity
  • To lead and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification and evaluation of asset data and needs in order to develop early solutions, in line with agreed methodologies and prioritisation criteria.
  • To lead the development of early solutions for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
  • To monitor the delivery of agreed early solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
  • To ensure that asset data and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s), in line with agreed standards and timescales.
  • To identify, prepare briefs and support delivery of survey works that support the improvement and/or renewal of assets.
  • To develop the technical briefs provided to the design and construction contractors for improvement and renewals work.
  • To provide technical support to Project Managers by providing materials approvals, vetting of contractors' compliance, inspection support on site, and reviewing of Health and Safety Files.
  • To undertake technical reviews of third party designs to ensure that they comply with standards, design briefs and Design for Maintenance Requirements.
  • To support the development of more junior team members, either through coaching, mentoring or more formal line management arrangements.

To be Successful

  • Degree or HND in relevant discipline and appropriate experience.
  • A Chartered or Incorporated Engineer is desirable and a member of a relevant professional Body with appropriate experience is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of asset condition assessment and degradation modelling
  • Knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the VRS design.
  • Experience in working within budgets including the creation of a budget for scheme development
  • Experience in highway construction and delivery methods.
  • Good knowledge of CDM 2015
