Our client, who are immersed in the world of Research and Development, are looking for a contract Electrical Engineer to join their team based out of their operation near Southampton.

Job description

The overall role is responsible to lead the electrical definition, development and delivery of multiple interconnected components, from different internal and external engineering and R&D disciplines to create innovative next generation products.

Key areas of work will be:

  • Managing innovation projects for new device technologies transferring across from the Discover Proof of Concept Team and in Proof of Application / Develop.

  • Managing improvement projects for manufacturability, cost reduction, complexity reduction, component selection and obsolescence or consumer complaint reduction.

  • System Design Specification - work with necessary stakeholders and prepare system requirements specification including hardware and software.

  • Assist project manager with project schedule development and milestone definition.

  • System Functional and Non-Functional Analysis - carry out a range of analysis and investigations to create the user stories for the product.

  • Lead internal teams and / or external development partners to define the expected system functionality and performance targets.

  • Assist internal teams and / or development partners with product realization activities.

  • Provide operations and sourcing with documentation and process development assistance to produce the product as developed.

  • Liaise with cross category architecture teams to maintain alignment with the specified programs, as well as electrical and physical architecture.

  • Working with our internal teams and / or development partners, create functional designs, demonstrating how the system satisfies the defined customer requirements.

  • Product Verification and Validation - design and develop system integration plan and tests.

  • Lead System Integration and test (EVT).

  • Assist with safety certification testing and country specific homologation.

  • Lead cross-functional technical and design reviews on the products.

  • Responsible for product documentation from initial proposals through first production release.

  • Assist with production and field failure analysis as required.

  • Provide device and electrical / electronics systems Subject Matter Expertise (SME) for prior art technical assessments of patents for freedom to operate.

  • Designing and leading (internally or with our partners) R&D device design experiments in support of assertive patenting workstreams.

  • Working with third-party assemblers and designers to ensure all performance, visual and regulatory specifications are properly described and understood.

  • Ensuring electronics design and packaging meet requirements of battery technologies

  • Develop test kit, where necessary, to interrogate onboard chips or measure outputs against a functionality matrix.

  • Improving drawing standards and ensuring drawings supplied from design teams / 3rd party industrial design agencies meet requirements for PCB assembler implementation and quality inspection.

  • Create reports and learning documents for future design improvements.



Suitable candidates will ideally have a good knowledge and understanding of product development processes and also have a background in single layer PCB design experience. Electronics test design experience is also required along with certification for IPC J-STD-001 and IPC-A-610 (level 1)

Other desirable qualities include:

  • Component selection in battery powered, consumer electronics
  • RF comms design
  • Electronics and battery encapsulation.
  • Component choice for manufacturability, operational performance and consumer safety
  • KPI definition and dashboard creation
  • Statistical analysis (6-sigma) and Continuous Improvement planning
  • Validation planning through an appropriate model
  • Working knowledge of electrical and firmware

design methods

  • Working knowledge of mass produced product

development and debug tools

  • Working knowledge of international safety standards for consumer electronics products
  • MS Project, Visio, PowerPoint, excel, and word
  • Fluent in Electrical CAD software use


The chosen individual must have a Bachelor of Science in an Electrical engineering field, experience of working within product development in related field and also previous experience in Requirements creation and / or product verification testing. They would also be interested in applications from an individual with previous experience launching a consumer electronic product into volume production

This contract is initially for 12 months but is very likely to last a lot longer

Pay:
£350-£400 per day (Inside IR35) depending on suitability
