Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer


Our client, a leading aerospace company, is seeking a Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer to join their team. As a Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer, you will be responsible for the verification, validation, and testing of flight test instrumentation systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

Requirements Capture

  • To work with the other disciplines (Flight, Mechanical, Avionics) and the other stakeholders (Customers and Subcontractors) to drive a set of FTI (Flight Test Instrumentation) requirements.
  • FTI requirements shall include but are not limited to:
    • Sensors (Accelerometers, Potentiometers, Strain gauges)
    • Aircraft Data Systems (ADC, FDR, DFDAU, QAR)
    • Aircraft Indicator Systems
  • Support the development of the Flight Test plans to ensure the FTI is fit for purpose.

FTI Design

  • Utilize robust systems capable of performing within specified environments and compatible with the aircraft power supply systems.
  • Specify equipment and parts that meet both the FTI and Airworthiness requirements.
  • Produce equipment assessments for the FTI systems/equipment to ensure it is fit for purpose and will not present an unsafe condition to the aircraft.
  • Ensure all FTI has adequate installation data.
  • Define installation instructions to support the engineering team (Electrical/Mechanical) such that the FTI will perform its intended function (adequately securing cables for accelerometers).
  • Sign off the FTI data and installation in an appropriate manner.
  • Ensure that there is sufficient spare equipment for the lifespan of the flight test window.
  • Ensure that the equipment remains within calibration for the lifespan of the flight test window.

Aircraft Operation

  • Manage and oversee the calibration of the FTI, as necessary.
  • Manage the data obtained by the FTI.
  • Manage the processing of the FTI data.
  • Manage the formal delivery of the FTI data to the appropriate parties.
  • Liaise with the Flight Test team in the development of the flight test plans.
  • Produce FTI checklists per sortie.
  • Manage the FTI systems during the flight test or provide sufficient guidance when absent.
