Our client, a leading authority in highway management, is currently seeking a Street Lighting Engineer on a contract basis to join their team. The role is integral to ensuring the effective design, management, and improvement of street lighting schemes, with a focus on safety, sustainability, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the technical lead for reviewing and approving street lighting designs under Section 278 and Section 38 agreements.
- Provide professional advice on lighting design proposals, including column placement, illumination levels, and integration with existing assets.
- Develop and deliver improvement programmes for the street lighting network, focusing on modernisation and safety-critical interventions.
- Champion decarbonisation by implementing sustainable solutions such as LED upgrades, adaptive controls, and renewable energy technologies.
- Contribute to the development and periodic review of street lighting policies, standards, and specifications.
- Oversee the asset management system, ensuring data quality, inventory updates, and reporting for investment planning.
- Manage project budgets and monitor expenditure, ensuring value for money and delivery within approved resources.
- Liaise with developers, consultants, contractors, elected members, and the public to resolve issues and maintain positive relationships.
- Manage and monitor the Council's street lighting electrical maintenance contract to ensure contractor performance and compliance.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior staff and trainees.
Job Requirements:
- Experience in highway engineering, specifically in street lighting design and management.
- Strong knowledge of British Standards, Codes of Practice, and highway policies.
- Understanding of sustainable solutions in lighting, including LED upgrades and renewable energy options.
- Proficiency in managing project budgets and monitoring expenditures.
- Skills in using and overseeing asset management systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with a range of stakeholders.
- Current driving licence (maximum 6 penalty points allowed) and willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
