The Role
As a Principal Electrical Design Engineer, you will play a senior technical leadership role in the delivery of varied and exciting water and wastewater projects across the Southern Water region. You will lead electrical design solutions for complex schemes, from concept through to detailed design and construction support.
This is a long-term contract position offering genuine flexibility and the ability to work remotely for the majority of your time, with site and office attendance only when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-level electrical design leadership and technical assurance on multi-disciplinary water industry projects.
- Develop and review electrical designs, including power distribution, motor control centres (MCCs), instrumentation, control & automation, and LV/HV systems.
- Lead design reviews, HAZOPs, and risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, DSEAR, BS7671, Water Industry Mechanical & Electrical Specifications, and Southern Water requirements.
- Mentor and support junior engineers within the team.
- Interface with clients, contractors, and other design disciplines to deliver best-value solutions.
- Support tender and framework bid activities.
What You'll Need
- Chartered or Incorporated Electrical Engineer (or working towards) preferred.
- Extensive experience in electrical design within the water/wastewater industry (or similar regulated sector).
- Strong knowledge of LV/HV power systems, control systems, and instrumentation.
- Proven track record delivering Principal Designer / Technical Lead responsibilities.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Full UK driving licence (for occasional site visits).
