Rail2050 puts Ireland's regional cities at the heart of a growing, sustainable transport network. Centred on Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Galway, the strategy delivers frequent, attractive rail services on both existing and new lines, enhancing connectivity, improving accessibility, supporting housing supply, and driving balanced regional growth right across the country.

Cork

Delivering high-frequency electrified services and new stations across the Cobh, Midleton and Mallow network through Kent Station.

Limerick

Establishing Colbert Station as a central transport hub, with new stations, the reinstated Foynes line and a new connection to Shannon town and airport.

Galway

Transforming Ceannt Station into a modern transport hub, with double-tracking from Athenry and significantly increased services on the Dublin and Limerick lines.

Waterford

Building a new city-centre station on the north quays, more than doubling services to Dublin and Limerick, with the Wexford line to follow.

Integrating Rail in Ireland

Rail2050 focuses in developing the 4 different types of rail services and integrating with other types of public and active travel modes.

Urban

Doubling capacity and trebling electrification in the Dublin area by delivering the Dart+ programme which will add a cross city tunnel and expand network lines.

Intercity

Building service frequencies to at least hourly between cities and 2 hourly on other lines, reducing journey times and adding capacity and decarbonising through electrification and renewable energy usage.

Regional

Building regional networks on new and existing lines enhancing connectivity and supporting regional growth and accessibility.

Freight

Placing rail at the centre of a sustainable freight transport system. Supporting supply chains the economy and the environment and enhancing connectivity with the ports of Dublin, Cork, Foynes and Russlere Europort.
