Civil Engineering - Engineer / Senior Engineer / Principal Engineer (Highways & Infrastructure)

Overview

We are seeking experienced and motivated Civil Engineers at Engineer, Senior Engineer, and Principal Engineer level to play a key role in delivering a diverse range of highway and infrastructure schemes across the UK.

As part of a growing Civils team within a leading independent consultancy, you will work on a varied portfolio ranging from small highway improvements to large-scale residential and commercial developments (typically 150-5000 units), including associated infrastructure.

The Role

Depending on your level of experience, you will:

  • Lead or support the design and delivery of highway and civil engineering schemes from concept through to detailed design and construction

  • Design a wide range of highway access solutions, including:

    • Roundabouts
    • Signalised junctions
    • Ghost island right turns
    • Priority junctions
  • Deliver highway and drainage designs in line with relevant standards and best practice

  • Contribute to or lead projects, ensuring delivery on time and within budget

  • Prepare technical reports, drawings, and documentation

  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, National Highways, and other stakeholders

  • Support or lead adoption processes and agreements (S278, S38, S104)

  • Mentor and support junior team members (Senior/Principal levels)

  • Contribute to fee proposals, bids, and business development (Principal level)


Key Responsibilities by Level

Engineer / Senior Engineer

  • Provide design expertise and technical delivery support
  • Work across multiple projects, contributing to design and documentation
  • Assist in project management and coordination
  • Support mentoring of junior staff (Senior level)

Principal Engineer

  • Lead projects and manage multi-disciplinary teams
  • Take full responsibility for technical delivery and project outcomes
  • Lead client engagement and stakeholder negotiations
  • Contribute to business growth, including developing client relationships
  • Oversee financial performance and project profitability

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline)

  • Proven experience in highway design, particularly access junctions

  • Experience across design stages: concept to detailed design

  • Strong knowledge of UK standards and guidance, including:

    • DMRB
    • Manual for Streets
    • LTN 1/20
    • NRSWA
  • Experience with highway and drainage adoption processes:

    • S278, S38 and S104 agreements
  • Knowledge of local authority and National Highways requirements

  • Proficiency in industry software such as:

    • AutoCAD
    • Civils 3D
    • Vehicle Tracking
    • KeyLINES / SIGN / POST
    • Causeway Flow / InfoDrainage
  • Strong communication, organisational, and time management skills

  • Ability to deliver work to high technical standards and meet deadlines


Desirable

  • Experience in LTN 1/20 compliant cycling and active travel schemes
  • 3D modelling and earthworks design (cut and fill analysis)
  • Public realm and urban environment design
  • Utilities coordination
  • Site supervision or monitoring experience
  • Experience preparing technical reports, fee proposals and bids
  • Progression towards or attainment of professional qualification (IEng/CEng)

Additional Requirements (Principal Engineer)

  • Typically 7-10 years' post-graduate experience
  • Proven ability to lead complex highway projects
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and project management skills
  • Experience managing budgets and project finances
  • Ability to build and maintain client relationships
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capability
