Principal Engineer - Product Safety (RCD)
Location: Scotstoun, Glasgow (hybrid - typically 1-2 days onsite per week)
Contract: 12 months
Rate: £60.00 PAYE (Inside IR35) or £81.05 UMB
Security: BPSS, need to be eligible for SC
Hours: 40 per week
The role
We're recruiting for a Principal Engineer (Product Safety) to join a Programme Product Safety team within a major organisation in the Defence & Security sector. You'll work autonomously, providing thought leadership and stakeholder management to support the development and delivery of robust safety case arguments.
Key responsibilities
- Lead hazard identification, risk analysis, and development of safety schemes with subsystem Technical Authorities
- Build and maintain safety case arguments supported by assurance evidence and artefacts
- Support Technical Authority teams with hazard/risk management, mitigation and hazard log development
- Coordinate and lead customer engagement workshops; agree evidence requirements, prepare evidence packs and produce safety submissions
- Conduct product safety assessments for major subsystems / complex technologies
- Lead updates to System Design Safety Assessments (SDSAs) to support safety case refreshes
- Manage stakeholder engagement across the supplier base and key customer stakeholders to support progress to certification
- Verify quality/accuracy of hazard log submissions; produce monthly reporting and statistics
- Plan, organise and facilitate HAZIDs, review meetings, and contribute to wider safety activity
- Take ownership of product safety activities in your allocated equipment area, including tasking/reviewing junior engineers' work
Essential experience
- Strong knowledge of product safety management processes and techniques
- Experience working across multiple phases of a Life Cycle Management (LCM) framework
- Awareness of relevant ship/system safety standards such as:
- DSA-02 / DSA-03
- JSP430
- Def Stan 00-056
- MIL-STD-882E
- BS EN 61508
Desirable
- Familiarity with Product Safety Management frameworks and through-life engineering considerations
- Experience delivering product safety in naval or wider defence projects (sensors/weapons exposure is a plus)
- Awareness of internal product safety policies/procedures in large defence environments
Qualifications
- Professionally registered, or eligible for professional registration, in a STEM discipline
