Our client, a leading organisation in the rail sector, is seeking an Interoperability Engineer for a remote contract role running initially until the end of March 2027. The role will lead and coordinate interoperability compliance activities across a major project portfolio, supporting independent assessment, authorisation and entry into service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary interoperability interface with the client, Approval Bodies, Designated Bodies, the Office of Rail and Road and other key stakeholders.
- Develop, implement and maintain the Interoperability Management Plan, authorisation strategies and associated roadmaps.
- Identify, interpret and manage applicable National Technical Specification Notices, National Technical Rules and interoperability requirements.
- Maintain NTSN baseline, NTR, compliance, risk, issue, derogation and departure registers.
- Develop and maintain the Interoperability Compliance Matrix, ensuring requirements are fulfilled, traceable and appropriately evidenced.
- Coordinate with design, systems engineering, integration, verification, validation, testing, commissioning and supplier teams to close evidence gaps.
- Prepare and maintain evidence registers, Technical File catalogues, Intermediate Statements of Verification and authorisation documentation.
- Report on compliance status, risks, issues, evidence maturity and authorisation readiness, escalating non-conformities and outstanding actions where necessary.

Job Requirements:
- Experience working as an engineer within the rail industry, with a strong understanding of railway systems and engineering lifecycles.
- Significant experience in rail interoperability, compliance, assurance, authorisation or systems engineering.
- Knowledge of National Technical Specification Notices, National Technical Rules, interoperability constituents and related authorisation obligations.
- Understanding of the requirements for independent assessment, Technical Files, evidence management and entry into service.
- Experience preparing compliance matrices, evidence registers, verification records and structured technical documentation.
- Ability to identify and manage compliance gaps, risks, non-conformities, derogations, exemptions and departures.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with Approval Bodies, Designated Bodies, regulators, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Excellent communication, reporting, organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage competing project priorities remotely.
