The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK's nuclear submarines.

The Job

Whilst based in the Barrow shipyard, the SDA supports Smarter working, which empowers you to make decisions about when, where and how you work.

In this role, you will lead a specialist engineering team, providing oversight to submarine build and commissioning activities.

PNO are a team of circa 60 staff, predominantly engineers, providing independent assurance that submarine build activities are conducted and meet the necessary requirements of the contract. The team also ensures that project and engineering risks and opportunities identified within the build environment are effectively mitigated and/or realised. We undertake risk based surveillance of vessels during build and provide waterfront and build support/advice to delivery teams. We also ensure correct standards are maintained by promoting the Governance, Assurance and Improvement of acquisition, engineering and logistics support activities.

As a motivated and driven engineer, you will be provided ample opportunity to up skill and develop your expertise of fabrication methods and testing requirements of the structures and systems of a nuclear submarine, to enable effective build and commissioning assurance and acceptance.

Due to the nature of the project involved, this role will require applicants to be sole UK Nationals. Please also note that this role offers a successful applicant the following:

* Internal Applicants: Internal Applicants will be eligible for full relocation expenses
Responsibilities
As Engineering Manager, you will oversee and coordinate all assurance and acceptance surveillance activities of the Submarine Systems for the Astute and Dreadnought Class, ensuring through-life design intent is maintained through compliance with build standards and test specifications.

Using your knowledge of submarine systems, their fabrication, commissioning and operation, you will define technical requirements, manage solution development and ensure compliance with the customers' requirements during the product build.

General day-to-day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

* Providing approval, evaluation and acceptance of documentation pertaining to the manufacture, testing and commissioning of a variety of submarine systems
* Managing team contribution towards an effective surveillance plan and undertake build surveillance to gather independent assurance over product build quality and contractual conformance
* Determining quality management and assurance approaches ensuring technical risks are understood and managed
* Providing regular technical briefs to PNO management on build/commissioning progress and produce written reports on specific technical issues for respective project teams (engineering and programme) for review at senior level
* Promoting and fostering positive, effective and enduring relationships with the ship builder at all levels across the PNO organisation

What you will be assessed against
To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:
* Hold a relevant Level 4 (e.g. HNC, or higher) qualification in an Engineering or Science discipline, or have equivalent experience
* Have demonstrable stakeholder management experience
* Have experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes from within a heavy regulated industry, i.e. maritime, aeronautical, oil & gas, chemical, or similar
* Have a technical commissioning/testing/trials experience in a variety of contexts

It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
* Have experience in the build, commissioning or operation of submarine engineering systems
