Job description
Role: Senior Communications Engineer/Designer
Location: Toronto, ON, CANADA
Contract Type: Full Time - Permanent
Salary: $120,000-$160,000 (depending on years experience and level)
Matchtech are currently seeking a Senior Transit Communications Engineer/Designer to join our clients Transportation Systems Rail & Transit team, located at their Toronto office. Reporting to the Communications Lead, the candidate will be familiar with one or more of the following systems: fibre optics, networking, Public Address and Variable Messaging System (PA/VMS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), CCTV, Access Control Systems, Telephony. You will work with a team of Senior Engineers, designers, and technologists to develop robust, reliable communication system designs for some of the largest projects in Canada.
Responsibilities:
- Transit Communications systems design.
- Develop conceptual, preliminary and final electrical designs on communication systems projects.
- Perform system technical design of various communications systems including Infrastructure (Fibre & Copper), Communications spaces, IT Networking (IP WAN, LAN and WLAN), Access Control, Public Address Systems, Telephony (VoIP & Analog), Radio (DAS & VDRS), PA, SCADA, Passenger Information Display System, Fare Collection System.
- Produce verification/validation plans and procedures and participate in telecommunication systems troubleshooting;
- Contribute to system integration activities and provide Interface Control Documents for the telecommunication system internal/external/third-party interfaces;
- Perform telecommunication systems technical reviews for design submissions and respond to technical inquiries;
- Elaborate BOM and BOQ reports for the projects;
- Perform field investigations and inspections and evaluate existing conditions on communications and security systems, including communicating design requirements with contractors and equipment suppliers.
- Develop Design documents including Plans, Technical Specifications and Estimates for improvement of Transit projects.
- Perform and review various design calculations, reports and construction submittal reviews.
- Design wayside cable plant and routing of conduits and ducts.
- Participate in formal engineering review processes.
- Review project documents for quality and accuracy.
- Serve as technical liaison with clients for Communications work.
- Support planning, design, and construction phases of projects.
- Maintain cost control and quality control for assigned projects.
- Provision of on-site construction and commissioning technical support.
Qualifications:
- A degree/diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical/Telecommunications Engineering from a recognized university or college.
- Master's Degree or higher in Electrical/Telecommunications Engineering from an accredited University will be considered an asset;
- Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (or the experience necessary to attain this);
- Minimum 10 years of experience in telecommunications, data communications and radio systems;
- Min. 4 years of demonstrated design and engineering experience in the Railway or similar heavy industries such as energy or infrastructure.
- Excellent design abilities in railway-related telecommunication systems and proven knowledge and extensive experience in system engineering principles.
- Excellent soft skills including communication, interpersonal, presentation, leadership and report writing proficiency with a strong desire and ability to collaborate in problem-solving within an integrated team environment.
- Excellent attitude towards safety and a demonstrated ability to comply with the safety requirements
- Experience in the design, specification, installation, expansion and optimization of Communication systems and associated infrastructure.
- Experience in the investigation, planning and supervision of construction works and/or maintenance activities in operational facilities
- Current knowledge of industry or regulatory standards and study criteria pertinent to ICT systems engineering ensuring compliance of design work with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients on a technical and interpersonal level.
- Capable of writing reports, reviews, spreadsheets, proposals, cost estimates and contract documents.
- CCNA, BICSI RCDD and similar certifications would be considered an asset.
- Full Driver's License and owned vehicle.
