Job description

Introduction

Our client, a leading specialist communications equipment manufacturing firm based in Wandsworth, south west London, is seeking a skilled Tool Maker to join their well-equipped tool room/machine shop. With extensive experience and a strong reputation, our client produces a range of bespoke and standard RF antenna products for various industries and market sectors.

Role Overview

As a Tool Maker, you will report to the Production Support Services Team Leader and play a crucial role in supporting the production team to meet objectives. Your responsibilities will include assisting with the design and manufacture of injection mould tooling, manufacturing prototype parts, supervising the tool room, maintaining stock control, and providing expert advice on purchasing components and materials. You will also contribute to equipment maintenance, comply with legal and health & safety standards, and continuously improve workshop operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design and manufacture of injection mould tooling and production jigs and fixtures.
  • Manufacture prototype parts, including turned parts and other machined parts.
  • Supervise the tool room, allocating jobs, scheduling machines, and planning processes.
  • Manage stock control and ensure the maintenance of new tooling, jigs, and equipment.
  • Train, assist, and supervise other members of staff in the tool room.
  • Perform building and equipment maintenance to minimise production disruption.
  • Maintain compliance with legal, health & safety standards, and assist in health & safety aspects of projects.
  • Undertake maintenance, adjustment, repair, and cleaning of workshop equipment and tools.
  • Provide expert advice on the purchasing of components/materials for the tool room and other machinery.
  • Make recommendations and contribute to the continuous improvement of the workshop and its operation.
  • Assist with the modification and maintenance of existing equipment.

Job Requirements

  • Professional tool-making qualification or engineering qualification with significant relevant experience.
  • Experience in assembling, repairing, and maintaining injection moulding tools, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Competence in using both manual machines, CNC machines, and other tool room equipment.
  • Hands-on experience using machine tools (lathe, milling, drilling, surface grinding, EDM, etc.) as a tool maker.
  • Ability to read and understand tooling drawings in both 2D and 3D.

Working Hours

42.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8am until 5pm, with 30 minutes lunch break (unpaid) and two paid tea breaks of 15 minutes each.
