Overview

We are looking for an experienced Principal Systems Engineer specialising in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support the development of complex submarine systems.

In this role, you'll use your expertise in systems modelling to help define requirements, shape designs, support analysis activities, and provide evidence for verification and validation throughout the engineering lifecycle. You'll act as a technical leader, influencing engineering decisions, developing modelling capability within the team, and ensuring robust systems engineering practices are applied across programmes.

What You'll Be Doing

Systems Modelling & Engineering

  • Develop and maintain system models that support the full engineering lifecycle, from concept development through to delivery and support.
  • Apply MBSE techniques to capture, analyse and manage system requirements.
  • Support system design, analysis, verification and validation activities using modelling approaches.
  • Understand and communicate how system models impact wider submarine platform design and performance.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as a subject matter expert for MBSE across engineering teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers and stakeholders.
  • Support the growth and development of MBSE capability and best practice within the organisation.
  • Share knowledge and lessons learned to strengthen engineering capability across teams.

Requirements & Design Assurance

  • Ensure requirements are accurately captured, managed and traced through the design process.
  • Support the flow-down of requirements to suppliers and review their deliverables for compliance.
  • Ensure design evidence is robust, documented and approved by the appropriate authority.
  • Support design reviews and engineering governance activities.

Project & Programme Support

  • Contribute to project planning, bids and proposals by providing estimates of effort, scope and resources from an MBSE perspective.
  • Monitor engineering progress, identify risks or issues, and support recovery planning where required.
  • Provide specialist technical input to programmes beyond your immediate area of responsibility.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure engineering activities are delivered safely and in accordance with company processes and industry best practice.
  • Support compliance with defence, maritime and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain a strong focus on product safety and SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) requirements.

Key Deliverables

You'll contribute to the successful delivery of:

  • System requirements models and traceability evidence.
  • Technical solutions that meet customer, contractual and regulatory requirements.
  • Controlled design documentation and model-based design artefacts.
  • Design change assessments and associated documentation.
  • Lifecycle Management (LCM) reviews and engineering governance activities.
  • Technical reviews of supplier and subcontractor deliverables.
  • Development and coaching of engineers in MBSE methods and tools.

What We're Looking For

Essential Experience

  • Significant experience applying Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) within defence, maritime, aerospace or other highly regulated engineering environments.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles across the engineering lifecycle.
  • Experience developing and maintaining system models to support requirements, design, verification and validation activities.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring or coaching engineers.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Understanding of defence and/or maritime engineering standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of requirements management and systems engineering toolsets.
  • Awareness of emerging MBSE technologies, methods and industry developments.
  • Strong appreciation of product safety, quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to operate effectively within complex, multidisciplinary engineering programmes.
