Our client, a fast-moving and profitable Defence-Tech company, is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join their dynamic team in Hereford. The company is renowned for building and fielding UAS and drone systems for the Defence and Security sector, with products in active service on live operations with MoD and allied forces. This is an on-site, permanent role with an exciting opportunity to work closely with hardware and see the impact of your work on real operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own complete mechanical assemblies from concept through production, responsible for 3D models, manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions.
- Design for manufacture, selecting appropriate processes such as CNC machining, sheet metal, injection moulding, 3D printing, and composite layup.
- Integrate electronics, wiring, connectors, and mechanical subsystems into compact assemblies, collaborating with electronics and embedded software engineers.
- Assemble prototype hardware and support environmental and qualification testing, analysing test failures and making necessary design adjustments.
- Conduct hand calculations for loads, fits, thermal expansion, and fastener selection, using FEA when appropriate.
- Maintain revision-controlled CAD data and produce clear engineering change notes.
- Design structural and enclosure components for unmanned aerial platforms and ruggedised housings for field-deployable systems.
- Work on electromechanical mechanism design including actuators, release mechanisms, and deployment systems.
Job Requirements:
- Experience in mechanical design within a product development environment, with parts designed, manufactured, and used.
- Proficiency in Siemens NX or SolidWorks, with the ability to be productive in 3D CAD from week one.
- Demonstrated experience designing for manufacture, familiar with CNC machining, sheet metal, injection moulding, additive manufacturing, or composites.
- Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis, understanding their importance and application.
- Comfortable working alongside electronics, software, or systems engineers, and designing around other hardware components.
- Hands-on experience with building prototypes and basic workshop operations.
