Our client is a leading design and engineering consultancy specialising in the delivery of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), traffic signals, and road lighting services across both strategic and urban road sectors. Their expertise spans ITS infrastructure design, operational consultancy, smart motorways, connected and automated vehicle technologies, smart cities, technology implementation, commissioning, business strategy, feasibility studies, and value management.
Due to continued growth and an expanding project portfolio, they are seeking an experienced Senior / Principal ITS Engineer to join their specialist highways technology team.
The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced ITS professional to play a key role in the delivery of high-profile transport technology projects across the UK. The role offers flexibility to work from home, from a regional office, or a hybrid combination of both.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, contribute to the delivery of complex ITS projects, and help drive innovation across highways technology and digital transport infrastructure. Depending on experience and capability, appointments may be made at either Senior or Principal Engineer level.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of ITS infrastructure and systems projects.
- Provide technical leadership and ensure the highest standards of quality across project deliverables.
- Support and mentor engineers and technicians within multidisciplinary teams.
- Develop innovative and practical engineering solutions for complex transport technology challenges.
- Work closely with clients, stakeholders, and project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with CDM 2015, health and safety requirements, quality procedures, and environmental standards.
- Support project planning, commercial management, and programme delivery.
- For Principal-level candidates, contribute to business development activities, bid preparation, client relationship management, and strategic growth initiatives.
About You
You will be passionate about technology-enabled transport solutions and have a strong background in ITS infrastructure and systems engineering.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline, or HNC/HND with significant relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of ITS infrastructure and systems design principles.
- Experience delivering highways technology projects within strategic or urban road environments.
- Working knowledge of relevant ITS standards and industry best practice.
- Experience operating within CDM 2015 and health, safety, quality, and environmental management frameworks.
- An understanding of project management principles and project delivery processes.
- Experience working within BIM and digital design environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
- Ability to mentor and develop junior team members.
Additional Requirements for Principal Engineer Level
- Recognised technical expertise within the ITS sector.
- Experience leading medium to large multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong commercial awareness, including bid preparation, pricing, contract management, and change control.
- Proven ability to build and maintain senior client relationships.
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) would be advantageous.
