We are seeking a Software Architect who is confident making significant architectural and design decisions and can communicate complex concepts effectively.

Working: The role offers flexible working but does require engineers on site for 3/4 days per week and is a on secure site where SC clearance is needed.

The role:

As a Software Architect, you will take ownership of the end-to-end software architecture, working closely with software delivery teams to define, maintain, and govern both the structural and behavioural aspects of systems. You will ensure that internal and external interfaces are designed effectively and that architectural decisions support the successful delivery of product requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, document, and own the key design drivers for software solutions, including performance, safety, security, user experience, simplicity, scalability, flexibility, and reusability.
  • Define, capture, and manage derived and emerging requirements, ensuring assumptions and design rationale are clearly documented.
  • Develop robust software architectures that maintain their integrity throughout implementation, ensuring detailed design decisions align with the architectural vision.
  • Collaborate with software delivery teams to guide architectural decisions and ensure consistent application of architectural principles.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical governance activities, providing expert architectural guidance and oversight.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Strong technical expertise with the ability to make informed architectural and design decisions.
  • A solid understanding of both modern and established software architecture principles, methodologies, and design patterns.
  • Experience with Model-Based Engineering approaches and practices.
  • The ability to mentor and guide engineering teams, clearly communicate architectural solutions, and collaborate effectively with software developers.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A passion for software engineering best practices, including continuous integration, automated testing, and high-quality software design.
  • The ability to evaluate and articulate architectural trade-offs, supported by clear design rationale and business context.
  • A strong understanding of software abstraction layers, software stacks, and system-level design principles.
  • Experience selecting, defining, and influencing the tools, frameworks, and technologies used across software development teams.
  • A strong software development background, ideally with practical experience across multiple programming languages.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in the Defence / Aerospace or safety regulated environment would be advantageous.
