Our client is seeking a Principal / Associate Engineer specialising in highways and drainage to join its multidisciplinary infrastructure team on a permanent, full-time basis. The role offers the opportunity to contribute to major transport, highways and regeneration projects across the UK, from the Wakefield office.

About the Role:


The successful individual will provide technical leadership across a diverse portfolio of highway infrastructure schemes, supporting projects from feasibility and concept development through to detailed design and construction. The role will involve working with public and private sector clients to deliver innovative, sustainable and future-ready transport solutions.
Projects may include walking and cycling improvements, urban regeneration schemes, strategic highway developments, transport interchanges, metro infrastructure and major framework commissions. The role will also contribute to team development, business growth and the continued advancement of transport infrastructure services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading the technical contribution to highways and drainage projects
  • Managing medium-sized projects or several smaller projects with complex features
  • Delivering detailed highway design and supporting projects through construction
  • Providing technical advice on professional, commercial and project-related matters
  • Managing project scope, resources, budgets and additional works in consultation with clients
  • Developing long-term client relationships and supporting business development activities
  • Acting as a technical lead while supporting the development of colleagues and the wider team
  • Collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors and other stakeholders

Job Requirements:

  • BEng or BSc in Civil Engineering, or an equivalent qualification
  • Significant experience leading civil engineering design projects
  • Detailed knowledge of highways design principles, drainage and industry processes
  • Experience in commercial management, project delivery and client interface activities
  • Experience in team leadership, staff development or technical management
  • Understanding of business development and the development of repeat client work
  • Strong numerical, analytical and report-writing skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work to deadlines independently and as part of a team

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Further degree such as an MSc or MEng in a relevant discipline
  • Professional qualification such as IEng, CEng or an equivalent accreditation
