About the Role
The Safety Engineer is a recognised subject matter expert responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of products throughout their lifecycle. Applying established safety standards and methodologies, the role involves identifying hazards, assessing and managing risk, and supporting the development of safe, compliant, and reliable systems.
Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, the Safety Engineer influences product design by embedding safety considerations from concept through to delivery. The role is particularly focused on delivering safety analyses, including FMEA/FMECA, hazard management, safety requirements definition, and safety case development for secure and mission-critical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct hazard identification, risk assessment, and safety analysis activities throughout the product lifecycle.
- Perform FMEA, FMECA, FHA, FTA, and other safety and reliability assessments.
- Define, derive, and manage safety requirements, ensuring traceability and compliance.
- Develop and maintain safety cases, hazard logs, and supporting safety documentation.
- Support product design and development by integrating safety considerations into engineering decisions.
- Facilitate safety reviews, risk workshops, and design assessments.
- Ensure safety requirements are verified and validated through testing and analysis.
- Provide safety guidance to engineering teams, customers, and stakeholders.
- Apply relevant standards including Def Stan 00-056, MIL-STD-1629, MIL-HDBK-217F, ARP4761, and ARP4754.
- Assess the impact of design changes on system safety and support configuration management activities.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support bids and proposals through safety engineering expertise and risk assessment.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience in safety-critical industries such as defence, aerospace, rail, or nuclear.
- Strong knowledge of safety standards and safety engineering methodologies.
- Experience in hazard analysis, risk management, FMEA/FMECA, and safety case development.
- Understanding of verification, validation, and assurance processes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical report-writing skills.
- Ability to influence engineering decisions and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organisational skills.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience with DOORS, Enterprise Architect, or similar systems engineering tools.
- Knowledge of digital electronics and hardware failure analysis.
- Experience in defence systems or high-assurance secure systems.
- Understanding of DevSecOps, automated testing, and modern engineering lifecycle practices.
