Our client operates in the automotive and advanced engineering sector, designing and manufacturing electric motors, power electronics, energy storage systems and thermal equipment for a range of vehicle and mobility applications. They are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a contract role to lead the development of innovative mechanical systems from clean-sheet concepts through to production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead clean-sheet mechanical design and development for rotating electrical machines, transmissions and drivetrains, with potential involvement in pumps, fans, power electronics and battery systems
- Manage concept development, prototyping, validation and the delivery of production-ready products
- Carry out mechanical analysis using hand calculations and CAE tools, considering component failure modes and material strengths
- Produce detailed 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for components and assemblies
- Build and test prototype hardware and test rigs as required
- Use simulation software to optimise designs and analyse product behaviour
- Work collaboratively with manufacturing, test, supply chain and external suppliers
- Support quality and regulatory compliance while mentoring junior engineers
Job Requirements:
- Strong experience in mechanical engineering and mechanical design
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling and 2D engineering drawing
- Experience with analytical methods and CAE tools such as ANSYS or MATLAB
- Practical knowledge of Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly, DFMEA and PFMEA
- Experience working with and managing external suppliers
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, component performance and failure analysis
- Ability to lead projects independently or contribute as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, although relevant experience may also be considered
Desirable Experience:
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and/or SolidWorks
- Working knowledge of MASTA or KISSsoft software
- Experience in high-volume manufacturing, including gravity or high-pressure casting part design
- Design experience involving electric motors, gears, transmissions, splines or bearing life calculations
- Previous experience working within a manufacturing environment
