Our client is seeking a Senior Primary Engineer to join its Transmission and Distribution team in Scotland on a permanent basis. The role will involve delivering senior technical engineering services for high-voltage and extra high-voltage substation projects across Transmission, Distribution and renewable energy sectors, including onshore and offshore wind, solar and BESS developments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as a senior technical lead in the production of primary engineering deliverables for substations and electrical infrastructure from 11kV to 400kV, with particular emphasis on 132kV and above.
- Prepare proposals, scopes, conceptual designs, execution plans, engineering estimates, project schedules and detailed design packages.
- Develop layouts and design documentation for Air Insulated Substations (AIS) and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), including land utilisation plans, elevations, conduit layouts, earthing arrangements, lighting, lightning protection, bills of materials and design calculations.
- Undertake busbar sizing, sag and tension assessments, and short-circuit force calculations for strung bus and equipment bus arrangements.
- Coordinate design activities with civil and structural, networks and transmission line teams, while conducting design reviews and liaising with clients and project stakeholders.
- Produce technical reports, presentations and FEED-stage consultancy deliverables, ensuring compliance with client standards, IEC, IEEE, NGTS and relevant UK technical requirements.
- Monitor project progress and quality, carry out technical checks, support multiple project teams and ensure submissions meet agreed standards and deadlines.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers, promote Safety by Design, and contribute to the improvement of design processes, tools and workflows.
Job Requirements:
- Degree-level qualification in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Significant experience in substation primary engineering within Transmission and Distribution, renewable energy or BESS projects.
- Strong technical knowledge of 275kV and 400kV substation design, with experience covering AIS and GIS environments.
- Practical understanding of UK transmission projects and National Grid technical specifications, technical guidance notes and design handbooks; experience with other UK utilities such as SSEN or SPEN would be advantageous.
