Senior OHL Engineer
Our client is seeking a Senior Overhead Line Engineer to support the delivery of major electricity transmission and distribution projects across Scotland. Based in Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth, the role will contribute to network reinforcement schemes, renewable energy connections and strategic infrastructure upgrades supporting the UK's transition to Net Zero.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and support overhead line engineering and design activities across projects ranging from 11kV to 400kV and above.
- Provide technical leadership, guidance and mentoring to engineers within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Undertake TP141 OHL design activities, including route development, structure spotting, clearance assessments, structure loading and line optimisation studies.
- Develop PLS-CADD models and complete sag-tension calculations, blowout assessments, swing angle studies and other technical analyses.
- Support feasibility studies, option assessments, stakeholder engagement, statutory planning and public consultation activities.
- Prepare technical reports, design documentation, specifications and engineering proposals for project development and delivery.
- Review technical deliverables to ensure compliance with industry standards, client requirements and applicable regulations.
- Contribute to design reviews, technical assurance, quality management and the development of safe, efficient and sustainable engineering solutions.
Job Requirements:
- Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in the design and delivery of overhead transmission line projects up to 400kV and above.
- Strong knowledge of TP141 OHL design principles, including structure spotting, route optimisation, conductor selection and clearance assessments.
- Experience supporting major transmission infrastructure projects, grid reinforcement programmes, renewable energy connections or wider energy network developments.
- Proficiency in industry-standard design tools such as PLS-CADD, with knowledge of PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE highly advantageous.
- Understanding of conductor upgrade projects, including High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) conductor technologies and network optimisation solutions.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards, utility requirements and best practice for overhead transmission systems.
- Ability to provide technical leadership and build effective relationships with clients, project managers, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Skills and Development:
- Knowledge of conductor galloping assessments, electromagnetic field effects, acoustic assessments, wake effects and AC interference studies.
- Chartered Engineer status or a clear commitment towards achieving professional registration.
- Experience contributing to technical committees, working groups or professional organisations such as CIGRE, IEEE or IET.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to project sites and client locations across Scotland, the UK and internationally where required.
