Our client is seeking a Senior Cable Engineer to join its growing Energy Networks team in Scotland. This permanent role will support major transmission, distribution, renewable energy and interconnector projects across Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth, helping deliver the high-voltage infrastructure required to support the UK's energy transition and Net Zero ambitions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop HV and EHV cable systems for 275kV and 400kV transmission and distribution projects.
  • Support HVAC and HVDC cable solutions for onshore, offshore, renewable energy and interconnector schemes.
  • Undertake cable system studies, including ampacity, cable rating, thermal analysis and performance assessments using tools such as CYMCAP.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, specifications, technical reports and design documentation.
  • Complete route, site and installation assessments, considering technical, environmental and constructability requirements.
  • Ensure cable system designs comply with relevant IEC standards, CIGRE guidance, client specifications, safety requirements and environmental regulations.
  • Provide technical support throughout manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning, including FAT, site testing and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with project managers, clients, contractors, manufacturers and multidisciplinary engineering teams while providing technical leadership and subject matter expertise.

Job Requirements:

  • Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in the design, specification, manufacture, testing and implementation of HV and EHV cable systems.
  • Strong understanding of 275kV and 400kV cable systems, cable ratings, ampacity, thermal performance and installation methodologies.
  • Experience across HVAC projects, with exposure to HVDC schemes, offshore wind connections, interconnectors or other complex energy infrastructure considered advantageous.
  • Knowledge of relevant international standards, CIGRE guidance and technical specifications relating to cable systems.
  • Experience supporting factory acceptance testing, site testing, commissioning, installation supervision and cable manufacturing activities.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with clients, contractors and internal stakeholders.
  • Chartered Engineer status or a clear commitment to achieving professional registration, with National Grid BP141 authorisation considered desirable.

Benefits and Development:

  • Opportunity to contribute to nationally significant transmission, distribution and renewable energy projects across Scotland.
  • Access to technical specialists and multidisciplinary teams across the UK and international energy business.
  • Structured professional development, mentoring and support towards Chartership and professional registration.
  • Career progression into technical leadership, project leadership or people management.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements, supported by offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth.
  • Opportunities to engage with industry working groups, technical committees and professional bodies such as CIGRE, IEEE, EI and IET.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Cable Engineer to help shape Scotland's future energy network and contribute to the growth of a specialist cable engineering capability. Occasional travel to project sites, client locations and manufacturing facilities may be required. Apply now to take the next step in a career delivering critical 275kV, 400kV, HVAC and HVDC infrastructure.
