Principal Software Engineer (Contract) - Naval Radar

BAE Systems (Defence Solutions) | Cowes, Isle of Wight | 6 months | Inside IR35

BAE Systems (Defence Solutions) is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer to support the development, maintenance and enhancement of advanced naval radar systems in service with the Royal Navy. Based full-time onsite in Cowes, you'll provide technical leadership across the software lifecycle, working within a large, established engineering environment.

  • Contract length: 6 months initially
  • IR35: Inside IR35
  • Rate: £54.57/hour PAYE or £73.68 Umbrella
  • Clearance/constraints: BPSS + full SC required to start, UK Eyes Only, subject to ITAR

What you'll be doing

  • Designing and developing software sub-system solutions for naval radar products
  • Providing technical expertise across requirements, design, implementation, test and verification
  • Deriving and maintaining software requirements from system requirements/baselines
  • Producing and maintaining software designs using high-level methodologies (UML essential)
  • Leading/participating in peer reviews, technical reviews, verification and approval of designs
  • Supporting the replacement of obsolete hardware/software to maintain and enhance radar capability
  • Acting as a technical lead at sub-system level across multiple projects and products
  • Maintaining software to address defects and implement new functionality
  • Supporting estimates and contributing to team development/mentoring

What we're looking for

  • Strong experience across the full software development lifecycle
  • Considerable experience in at least one high-level programming language (Ada95 desirable)
  • UML (essential) and structured design methodology experience
  • Understanding of software lifecycle models (e.g., Waterfall and Agile)
  • Knowledge of relevant standards (e.g., ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207)
  • Solid understanding of configuration management and use of CM tools
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence, guide and mentor others
  • Degree in Computer Science / Engineering (or similar numerate discipline); CEng or working towards is beneficial
