Our client is seeking Section 278/ 38 Engineer to support its Highways Development Approvals team on a contract basis. The role will focus on the technical review of developers' design submissions for adoptable highway infrastructure, helping to improve approval turnaround times and maintain compliance with local and national standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Appraise submitted highway designs against relevant local and national standards
- Review technical proposals for adoptable highway infrastructure under Sections 38 and 278 of the Highways Act
- Identify design issues and provide clear technical feedback to developers' designers and consultants
- Liaise with developers, consultants and internal stakeholders to progress submissions towards technical approval
- Support the Senior Design Engineer with the assessment and processing of applications
- Ensure design submissions reach a technically approvable standard
- Manage workloads independently and contribute to reducing application backlogs and delays
- Support the development of a future pre-submission technical advice service
Job Requirements:
- Experience in the technical approval or review of highway designs
- Background in highways, civil engineering, construction or a related discipline
- Understanding of adoptable highway infrastructure and development control processes
- Knowledge of Section 38 and Section 278 agreements under the Highways Act
- Experience of working within a local authority development control or similar environment
- Ability to interpret design submissions and assess compliance with relevant standards
- Confident communication skills for liaising with developers, designers and consultants
- Ability to work independently with minimal training in a fast-paced environment
- HNC, HND or degree in civil engineering or a related subject would be advantageous
