Technical authors generally come from an engineering background so they can understand and interpret the technology. Some of the documentation technical author jobs would require individuals to produce include; user guidance notes, installation guidance packages, basic fault finding, repair and maintenance techniques and records, AESPs (army equipment support publications) and JSPs (joint services publications).
